All that you want to know about Tooth Brush

What is a tooth brush?

It is a device used to clean your teeth, gums and tongue.
It has a head on which bristles are mounted, a handle to hold the brush comfortably and move it into all parts of the mouth and a neck which connects the head with the handle.

History
Before the Tooth Brush was invented many variety of oral hygiene measures were used like the twig of trees, feathers of birds, animal bones and porcupine quills etc.,
The first tooth brush was invented in China between 600 and 900 AD
Then Europe followed by other countries started using them and improvising on them to make the current tooth brushes available in the market round the world.

Types: Basically we have 3 kinds of Tooth Brushes

1.Manual Toothbrush
These are regular tooth brushes that come in different sizes and shapes.

2.Electric Toothbrush
These power brushes have their bristles rotating continuously and when combined with manual movement of the brush it can reach all areas of the mouth at ease and help in cleaning the area more efficiently. Literature shows that the health of the gums and teeth are better with power brushes than manual brushing.

3.Interdental Toothbrush:
In patients having gingival recession, exposing the area between teeth a tiny Interdental brush can be used. They are also useful in patients under braces treatment to clean between braces. These brushes clean the area between teeth and help removal of plaque.

Hygiene of tooth brush
  • It is recommended that the brushes not be shared between people since there are high chances of transmission of bacteria.
  • Once you finish brushing your teeth wash the brush under running water shake all the water off and let it dry. Do not keep them moist and closed in a box.
  • The bristles of the brush splay anywhere between 3-4 months. If they splay early you are applying excessive force and if they do not splay by 4 months you are not applying enough force while brushing your teeth.

Choosing a tooth brush

With so many different kinds of brushes available in the market it is quite confusing which one to buy. Comfort is the key. Pick a brush that you feel would be most comfortable for you. The best brush is the one that fits your mouth correctly and easily reaches all parts of your mouth.

Soft bristles are the most recommended. Do not use hard bristle brush. They remove enamel from tooth surface when used with pressure. Soft bristle brushes remove plaque and are gentle on your teeth.
